PART 2 - So what is CrossFit?
Ok so I haven’t technically answered the original question yet, can anyone do it?… Short answer YES, but let me explain. First we better address What is CrossFit? CrossFit is defined as a generalized fitness program consisting of constantly-varied functional movements performed at high intensity. Um…. So what does that even mean?
Generalized fitness?🧘 means it is not specific to any sport. It was created to make you well-rounded and ready for anything that life might throw at you, the known and the unknowable.
Functional movement? 🏋️ In CrossFit we do things that simulate daily living activities like Squatting, this is how you get out of bed a lounge, a chair or a toilet. Deadlifts and Cleans mimics picking a heavy item off the ground like a box or child.
Constantly varied? 🤸We are always mixing up the movements to keep things interesting (and allow for maximal progress!). Chasing broad and inclusive fitness by constantly varying the stimulus across loads, modality, rep scheme and time domains.
Performed at high intensity? 🤾Ok this is the tricky one… most of what we do is perceived to be done quickly. You might have heard the term “Capacity to move large loads over long distances, quickly”. Why? Working for a shorter amount of time at a higher work capacity tends to yield quicker results. But overall else, technique is fundamental. Show me you can lift something with great technique? Then show me you can do it consistently? Then we can add intensity and or load.
Well that’s the gist of it. Nothing crazy, right?🤪 Well, NOT according to many people who have yet to give it a try. Keep an eye out for our next post where I answer the common “I’m not fit enough to do CrossFit” mindset!
